I tried these exit slips out in my summer school class and I loved them. I was able to create small learning groups based on what each kid wrote at the end of the day. And I could watch their confidence grow as their comments and questions changed over the three week course. After talking with co-workers and my principal, I am going to adjust how I use these in my classroom. The plan is to vary what the kids write about. Whether it be a true-end-of-the-day exit slip or whether I prompt them to write about a specific subject, I haven't decided. I want to make sure this is something I and the kids can manage and benefit from throughout the entire school year. I bought each kid a composite notebook for them to glue their slips into after I have read them. At the end of the week or the month I will send the notebooks home and have the parents write their own reflection or comments on the following blank page. (I'll write reflections and comments as well). I hope this will be another way to communicate progress and to involve the parents in their child's education a little more.
